York-based Hethertons Solicitors recently supported Harrogate builder merchants, G H Brooks, with the acquisition of J Marsland & Sons, Timber & Building Supplies to further its expansion across Yorkshire as it celebrates 45 years of business.
The family-owned builders’ merchants prides itself on offering a personal ‘one stop shop’ service to local builders and has built a strong reputation with depots in Harrogate, Summerbridge and Easingwold.
The deal to acquire J Marsland & Sons adds depots in Wetherby and Guiseley and brings the opportunity to expand its customer base across West and North Yorkshire, whilst increasing its buying power.
A third-generation family business employing 65 people, G H Brooks specialises in supplying local builders with building and landscaping supplies, timber, bathrooms, and floor and wall tiles.
Started in 1979 with the first purchase of a branch in Harrogate by Chairman, Peter Broadwith, it expanded to new purpose-built premises in 1992.
Its success is attributed to offering a wide range of quality products at a fair price, a loyal team who provide honest advice and an excellent customer service.
The company has plans to develop the new sites in Wetherby and Guiseley to improve the experience for customers and provide growth for the business.
Speaking of the acquisition, Chairman Peter Broadwith said: “Having started G H Brooks 45 years ago, and now working with my son and grandson, I am delighted that the business continues to grow and expand.
Marsland Timber was a great fit for the business, and in particular, has brought us a fantastic 3.5-acre site in Wetherby. Being easily accessible off the A1 it is ideal for supplying builders in Leeds and across West Yorkshire where there is a much larger market.
The challenge for smaller builders’ merchants is being able to compete on price, as they don’t have the buying power. We pride ourselves on strong personal relationships with our customers and our aim is to bring Marsland’s customers a wide range of products at a fair price with a great customer experience.”
Hethertons Solicitors has proudly supported G H Brooks for the last 10 years, which included the acquisition of its depot in Easingwold in 2018.
The sale was led Tom Henry, Director and Jessica Roberts, Head of Corporate at Hethertons Solicitors. Discussing the sale, Tom said: “It has been a pleasure to assist all of the team at G H Brooks in the acquisition of J Marsland & Sons, which is a great opportunity for both the business and its customers.
“Being such an integral part of the local building communities where it operates, we look forward to seeing G H Brooks apply its formula for success in Wetherby and Guiseley and develop its business across West Yorkshire.”
