The National Gallery will be taking to the road and bringing one of its most famous paintings to York from 10 May to 8 September 2024 as part of an initiative to bring historic artwork to regional galleries.
Claude Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond (1899) will be coming to York Art Gallery, forming the core of a major new exhibition which will also feature other French examples of open-air painting alongside contemporary commissions, Japanese prints and a new Monet-inspired wildflower meadow at the gallery.
Part of the National Treasures programme, ‘Monet in York’ celebrates the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery, London.
Rachel Bolderow, Chief Operating Officer at Hethertons, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for York and the local community to get to know some of the most incredible art up close.
“It’s always exciting to see investment and recognition for regional art galleries – it’s beneficial for local people and for the organisations that support these sites.
“We’ll certainly be heading down from our office and would urge everyone who can to do the same!”
