What Our Clients Say

The service provided by both Jessica and James was excellent. Any issues/queries were always dealt with promptly with minimal input from me, which allowed me to concentrate on other matters in relation to the Liquidation.

When Andrew Walker needed legal advice in relation to the sale of his York-based accountancy business he had no hesitation in contacting Hethertons.

He had previously had dealings with the law firm through day-to-day work with his clients and approached them in January 2017 to discuss the transaction.

Simon Crack, the director of Hethertons’ My Business Legal, and Jessica Roberts, the Head of Corporate Law, talked Andrew through the sale of White Kite Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors – which he had set up almost a decade earlier.

He also relied on Hethertons for advice on the various aspects of employment law he needed to be aware of.

Andrew said that he was impressed with the firm’s efficient handling of the sale.

“I was looking for a law firm which was straightforward and wouldn’t complicate things,” he said.

“It was also important that I was dealing with a firm which was very responsive. With something like this there can be periods when there’s a lull and very little is happening and then there will be times when everything seems to be happening at once. I was impressed with how Hethertons managed all that.

“I also wanted to deal with solicitors who would make it clear what was and wasn’t possible. You want to be sure that you’re aware of all the options available.”

Following the successful completion of the sale, Andrew said he would be happy to continue to recommend Hethertons to other people, having already suggested them to a number of professional contacts previously.

Jean Barrington Limited is a bespoke stationery supplier, set up by Nigel and Jean Boyes 25 years ago.

The firm, based in Kirkbymoorside, manufactures a variety of gift stationery and social stationery and now distributes for a number of American companies.

The company were referred to Hethertons Solicitors when they were seeking corporate and commercial legal advice. Subsequently they have continued to receive ongoing guidance through the MyBusinessLegal team.

“Hethertons have been excellent,” said Nigel. “One of the matters we brought to them had got quite complicated, however they remained calm and professional throughout.

“What I’m looking for from a solicitor is somebody who is efficient. I want to know that if I need help with something that I’m able to just pick up the phone and they’ll be able to deal with it. I’ve always found that with Hethertons.”

Throughout his dealings with Simon Crack, head of the Hethertons MyBusinessLegal team, and Jo Yeates, who leads the firm’s employment team, Nigel said that he had always welcomed their plain-language approach.

“That’s been excellent,” he added. “They never try to confuse you with a lot of complicated terms, they’ve always used simple language that you can understand.”

And Nigel said he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hethertons to other people.

“I’d have no reason not to. I’ve found them professional, friendly and always able to get the job sorted.”

In 2011 Tom Hiskey co-founded The Law Wizard Limited, a start-up company that provides software to legal firms and probate specialists.

The York-based enterprise was a big success and three years later Tom and his business partner Rob Blake decided to take the opportunity to sell the business on.

They approached Hethertons for legal advice to progress the sale and were advised by the Head of the firm’s MyBusinessLegal team, Simon Crack.

Hethertons oversaw the business sale transaction from start to finish and Tom said it was a positive experience throughout.

“It was very, very good. You always knew that everything was in hand and that every stage of the process was being dealt with as thoroughly as possible.

“When you are selling your own company it can obviously be a very nervous time, but Hethertons put us at ease. Simon is extremely approachable and always made sure to keep us up-to-date with where things were and made it clear about what we needed to do next.”

Having previously worked in the legal profession himself, Tom is better placed than most to assess how a solicitor has handled a matter.

“What I can say from personal experience is that solicitors can sometimes be a bit unclear, but that wasn’t something I encountered with Hethertons at all. Everything was explained very well.

“I have already recommended Hethertons to people and would continue to do so in future.”

Little Acorns Limited is a successful day nursery based in the Clifton area of York.

Since opening in 2004, the nursery has expanded in size and today 15 members of staff help to look after almost 100 local children.

The business has been owned by Sarah Saville since 2011; she had already been working at the nursery for a number of years and decided to buy it when the previous owner retired.

When she needed a solicitor to guide her through the purchase, it was her accountant who recommended Hethertons and Sarah got in touch with Simon Crack, Director and Head of the firm’s MyBusinessLegal team.

Sarah said she couldn’t have been happier with the level of service she had received.

“From the very beginning I couldn’t have asked for more,” she said. “They were friendly, professional at all times and always there to deal with my queries. And because they were a local firm, I knew that I could see them in person if I needed to, as well as speaking to them on the phone.”

Hethertons provided Sarah with all the necessary legal advice relating to the purchase of the business and once the transaction was complete she continued to seek advice from the firm about matters such as employment law, liaising with head of department Jo Yeates.

“When I bought the business I was suddenly dealing with things that were completely new to me and it was important that I had someone I could turn to, to answer any questions that I had.

“Throughout the time I have been dealing with them, I’ve always found that Hethertons have gone above and beyond and have recommended them to a number of other people I know.”
