Calls for the Government to do more to protect workers from underpayment


The Resolution Foundation is leading calls for the Government to improve the enforcement of the minimum wage after it emerged that only one in eight firms breaking the rules are being caught by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Research by the think tank found that there has been a sharp increase in the number of workers underpaid, with an estimated 11,000 firms failing to pay workers the legal minimum wage during 2018/19.

The Government are urging councils to prioritise adoption practices to ensure that potential adoptive families are not wrongly turned down from providing a stable loving home to vulnerable young people.

The Education Secretary Gavin Williamson is leading calls for local authorities not to shy away from putting children forward for adoption and urged them to look into their existing practices after a fall in the number of assessments recommending adoption as the best option for a vulnerable child.

January remains the best month for a quick property sale


The latest research from the HomeOwners Alliance has revealed that January is the best month of the year to put your property on the market, with homes for sale this month selling faster than any other time of the year.

The organisation compiled data focusing on the time it takes to sell a residential property. They found that homes on the market in January were easiest to sell. Since 2015, homes listed on the market in January have taken an average of 57 days to sell.

First-time buyers hit record levels


First-time buyer figures have reached record levels for the second year running, a new study has revealed.

The Yorkshire Building Society, who published the research, found that 353,436 buyers purchased their first property in 2019, representing around 51 per cent of the mortgage market.
