Domestic Abuse Bill to include economic and non-physical abuse


 

The draft Domestic Abuse Bill has been published in a bid to further support victims and their families.

Updated legislation was proposed after research revealed that domestic abuse issues in England and Wales were costing the country £66 billion a year.

New law to ensure standards in rented accommodation


 

A new law will ensure that private and social rented properties will meet certain safety standards throughout a tenancy, the Government has announced.

The Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act, brought before Parliament by Minister for Housing Heather Wheeler, received Royal Assent in December.

Government considering backing down on proposed changes to probate fees


 

The Government are considering backing down on a proposed change to probate fees which has been labelled as the ‘stealth death tax’ on top of existing inheritance levies following heavy criticism from the House of Lords.

The proposals would have meant that estates worth £2 million or more would pay £6,000 in probate fees, up from the current rate of £215.

Pregnant women to receive more job protection under new Government plans


 

The Government are proposing new rules, which will see women who stop work to have a child, receive greater protection against the threat of redundancy.

The new legislation would extend the legal protection against redundancy for pregnant women for six months after they return to work, whilst measures may also be introduced to protect others, including men, returning from adoption or shared parental leave.

Pensions cold calling banned


 

The ban on unsolicited calls about people’s pensions came into effect on 9 January. This means that any firm making unwanted, unsolicited phone calls about pension payments may face enforcement action, including fines of up to £500,000.

As a Government statement pointed out, pensions fraud can be devastating, leaving victims without the means to fund their retirement.
