With new data protection rules set to come into force in May, Hethertons is helping local businesses prepare with an interactive online quiz.
The General Protection Data Rules (GDPR) will require businesses to alter the way they obtain, store and use personal information that belongs to their customers, suppliers and employees.
Taking effect on 25 May, the new legal framework will also mean changes to the processes they use to gain consent for contacting people and will give consumers the right to be forgotten.
Firms which fail to comply with the legislation risk being fined up to €20 million or up to four per cent of global annual turnover (whichever is the greater) for the most serious breaches.
Alongside its online quiz, Hethertons has already hosted a number of free talks to help businesses prepare for the new rules and it plans to organise more ahead of the implementation date.
David Scott, a Senior Associate Solicitor in our Employment team, is among those assisting companies with their preparations.
He said: “Our new online quiz features a number of multiple choice questions which are designed to not only inform businesses, but also give them an assessment of their current knowledge and preparations.
“GDPR is a significant change to data protection law and with the new penalties applicable from day one it is important that companies take time to prepare for these new rules.”
David advised employers that Brexit won’t prevent the new legislation being brought in and “that the rules apply to the data you already have, not just that which you obtain after 25 May.”
The quiz is available on the Hethertons website.
