What Our Clients Say
When Andrew Walker needed legal advice in relation to the sale of his York-based accountancy business he had no hesitation in contacting Hethertons.
He had previously had dealings with the law firm through day-to-day work with his clients and approached them in January 2017 to discuss the transaction.
Simon Crack, the director of Hethertons’ My Business Legal, and Jessica Roberts, the Head of Corporate Law, talked Andrew through the sale of White Kite Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors – which he had set up almost a decade earlier.
He also relied on Hethertons for advice on the various aspects of employment law he needed to be aware of.
Andrew said that he was impressed with the firm’s efficient handling of the sale.
“I was looking for a law firm which was straightforward and wouldn’t complicate things,” he said.
“It was also important that I was dealing with a firm which was very responsive. With something like this there can be periods when there’s a lull and very little is happening and then there will be times when everything seems to be happening at once. I was impressed with how Hethertons managed all that.
“I also wanted to deal with solicitors who would make it clear what was and wasn’t possible. You want to be sure that you’re aware of all the options available.”
Following the successful completion of the sale, Andrew said he would be happy to continue to recommend Hethertons to other people, having already suggested them to a number of professional contacts previously.

Throughout his dealings with Simon Crack, head of Hethertons’ Business Support Unit, and Jo Yeates, who leads the firm’s employment team, Nigel said that he had always welcomed their plain-language approach.
“That’s been excellent,” he added. “They never try to bamboozle you with a lot of complicated terms, they’ve always used simple language that you can understand.”

In 2011 Tom Hiskey co-founded The Law Wizard, a start-up company that provides software to legal firms and probate specialists.
The York-based enterprise was a big success and three years later Tom and his business partner Rob Blake decided to take the opportunity to sell the business on.
They approached Hethertons for legal advice to progress the sale and were advised by the head of the firm’s Business Support Unit, Simon Crack.
Hethertons oversaw the business sale transaction from start to finish and Tom said it was a positive experience throughout.
“It was very, very good. You always knew that everything was in hand and that every stage of the process was being dealt with as thoroughly as possible.
“When you are selling your own company it can obviously be a very nervous time, but Hethertons put us at ease. Simon is extremely approachable and always made sure to keep us up-to-date with where things were and made it clear about what we needed to do next.”
Having previously worked in the legal profession himself, Tom is better placed than most to assess how a solicitor has handled a matter.
“What I can say from personal experience is that solicitors can sometimes be a bit unclear, but that wasn’t something I encountered with Hethertons at all. Everything was explained very well.
“I have already recommended Hethertons to people and would continue to do so in future.”

Little Acorns is a successful day nursery based in the Clifton area of York.
Since opening in 2004, the nursery has expanded in size and today 15 members of staff help to look after almost 100 local children.
The business has been owned by Sarah Saville since 2011; she had already been working at the nursery for a number of years and decided to buy it when the previous owner retired.
When she needed a solicitor to guide her through the purchase, it was her accountant who recommended Hethertons and Sarah got in touch with Simon Crack, Director and Head of the firm’s Business Support Unit.
Sarah said she couldn’t have been happier with the level of service she had received.
“From the very beginning I couldn’t have asked for more,” she said. “They were friendly, professional at all times and always there to deal with my queries. And because they were a local firm, I knew that I could see them in person if I needed to, as well as speaking to them on the phone.”
Hethertons provided Sarah with all the necessary legal advice about purchasing a business and once the transaction was complete she continued to seek advice from the firm about matters such as employment law, liaising with head of department Jo Yeates.
“When I bought the business I was suddenly dealing with things that were completely new to me and it was important that I had somewhere I could turn to answer any questions that I had.
“Throughout the time I have been dealing with them, I’ve always found that Hethertons have gone above and beyond and have recommended them to a number of other people I know.”

Located in Brackenholme near the Yorkshire town of Selby, Munchkins Day Nursery is a 35 place nursery school, which also specialises in after school and holiday childcare for up to 25 youngsters.

Munchkins first heard about Hethertons through their financial advisor whilst preparing to open their business. Having heard about the excellent services they offered they contacted the firm and had a meeting with Simon Crack, Director and Head of the Business Support Team at Hethertons.
However, little did they know the importance of this initial meeting, Natalie continues the story: “We initially contacted Hethertons to help us set up the business and handle the lease on our property. It was clear from the start that they were able to provide the advice and services that we required and we felt really confident in trusting them to help us.
“Since then Hethertons have helped our business with a number of issues, but they have also helped me personally. The team at Hethertons are very professional but also very personable. They treat you like a human being and everyone I have worked with on both the business and private client side of the business has always been very helpful.”
Hethertons continue to provide Munchkins with a range of services through the Business Support Unit and Natalie says that she feels confident contacting Hethertons should she have any specific requirements.
Natalie added: “Many of solicitors within the firm know me by first name now and I know I can go to them with any issue I have. Hethertons are a great firm they make you feel comfortable, even at the most difficult times and their fees are very competitive. We have already recommended Hethertons to other business and we would definitely do so again in future.”

Based near Harrogate and established in 1958, Daleside Nurseries specialises in supplying plants and plant related items to the general public, landscapers and some florists who require specialist items.
Co-owned by managing director, Stuart Townsend, the business has grown in recent years and now employs some 16 people. Stuart first met Simon Crack, Director and Head of the Business Support Team at Hethertons some 25 years ago and when Simon moved to Hethertons in 1999, Stuart decided to move the business’s legal affairs to Simon’s new firm.
Stuart takes up the story, “we were always very impressed with Simon so it was an obvious choice to move to Hethertons Solicitors when he joined them. He is extremely approachable and refreshingly, doesn’t bamboozle you with legal jargon when working with you. Everything is incredibly straight forward and we can always be confident of being able to speak to him and his team as soon as we need assistance”.
Hethertons provide Stuart with a service to prepare and update the business employment contracts and advise on any aspects of employment law. As this area of legal compliance becomes ever more complex Stuart can relax in the knowledge that Hethertons are there to advise and guide them. More recently the Hethertons team have helped prepare legal documentation to comply with land registry requirements and in aiding the business recover some overdue payments.
Stuart continues, “I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hethertons to other businesses. We certainly go straight to them when we have any commercial legal issues and have always been able to get expert and grounded advice. I have also used Hethertons for my personal legal requirements more recently, with property conveyancing. This was as pleasant an experience as it has been in dealing with the commercial team”.
